Seersucker fabric (derived from the Persian phrase "shir o sakar" (milk and sugar) and arrived in the US in the 18th-19th century. New Orleans haberdasher Joseph Haspel popularized it as a gentleman's summer suit in the early 20th century, a style later adopted by Ivy League students and also became a symbol of Southern fashion.
